CEU Summer University course: Contestations of Citizenship in Times of Global Democratic Backsliding

Scholarship has long examined the construction of membership in democratic societies, often associating open and expansive citizenship with democracy, inclusion and pluralism. Far less academic energy has been dedicated to the trajectories of citizenship policies in countries, which have become the site of growing illiberalism and democratic decline.

This September, the Nationalism Studies community gathered in Budapest for the Nationalism Studies Reunion Conference, marking a unique moment of reflection, dialogue, and celebration. The event commemorated the hundredth anniversary of Ernest Gellner’s birth and the thirtieth anniversary of his death, honoring the intellectual figure whose ideas and legacy inspired the foundation of the program itself.

We mourn the passing of our dear colleague, Anton Pelinka, professor of Nationalism Studies and Political Science at CEU between 2006 and 2018.  He was a gentleman and a scholar, a mentor and a friend, a critical thinker and a moral authority.

Zero Week Schedule of the Nationalism Studies Program

For the attention of our new and continuing students: September 8-12 is a so called Zero Week at CEU, where professors give short presentations about their classes so you can make an informed decision about what courses you would like to take.
